As we are moving quickly towards race day, it is time to start thinking about how you are going to get through the run! A half marathon or an 8k is nothing to balk at and come race day, we want you to have all the necessary tools to put your best foot forward.  Many of you may know that running is as much a mental game as it is physical.  When you are out there at Mile 5 and getting tired, it is all too easy to give up, to just walk away (not that there is anything wrong with walking!), or to forget about all of your training and all of your goals for the last few months.   We do not want this to happen.  We want you to be able to give it your all.   So here are a few tips that can help while racing:

1)   Create a mantra.  Before the big day, settle on one or two or three mantras that will help get you to the finish line.   These are quick one-liners that are easy to repeat in your head when the going gets tough.  Your legs may be burning or you may be ready to sit down on the sidelines, but recalling and repeating those one-liners may just change your mind.  Some suggestions:  “Dig Deep,”  “Start Strong, Finish Strong,”  “Perseverance.”

2)   Listen to music.  Music can be a great motivator, especially “power songs,” those songs that just make you get up and go.  They give you a renewed sense of hope, energy, and spirit.    If you are creating a playlist for your race, make sure to sprinkle those power songs throughout the list but also during those miles that usually get tough for you.    Everyone has their own preference in songs, it may range from pop to oldies, it is what works for YOU and gets you ready to run, run, run!  We will also have live music along the course to keep you going!

3)   Convene a Cheering Squad. Ok, we know this is easier said than done, but if you can convince a friend or family member to come cheer you on at the race, it is a great motivator.  There is nothing like a happy, familiar face during one of those last miles to pick you up!  If you have fans coming out for the big day, make sure they check out our fan page here to prep.

Above all else, remember to have fun! The above are great motivators to keep you going, but beyond all else, we want you to be happy, safe, and healthy.
