NJ SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN SHADOW UNITE HALF MARATHON AND 8K
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The New Jersey Army National Guard’s 508th Military Police Company is organizing a “shadow run” of the Unite Half Marathon and 8K, to be held at Camp Phoenix in Kabul Afghanistan, on April 26, 2013, the same day the race is taking place at Rutgers University.
Staff Sergeant James L. Harrison participated in the Unite 8K last year, but this year he, along with the rest of his unit, is deployed to Afghanistan. Since there are more than 150 soldiers from all over the state of New Jersey, Harrison decided to coordinate the shadow race to give deployed soldiers a sense of home. “I hope to inject a little Jersey Pride into the daily life here. Having a sense of home is motivational to soldiers,” said Harrison.
CGI Racing, the company that produces the Unite Half Marathon and 8K,will assist in making the soldiers feel at home by providing t-shirts, posters, finish medals, and custom camo bibs (the bibs were donated by J-Chip timing and OutPut Services at no charge) printed with the words thanks to our troops. “We are thrilled to help make this race something special,” said Michele Redrow, President and CEO of CGI Racing. “We’re so honored that these soldiers decided to participate in our race while they’re so far away from home.”
SSG Harrison hopes the shadow race will help improve morale to all involved. “No matter the branch of service or Coalition Nation they may represent, all deployed in Afghanistan are invited to attend the race for a great cardio workout, and a healthy way to relieve a little stress.”
The Unite Half Marathon at Rutgers University is the second largest half-marathon in New Jersey. Over 6,000 participants are expected at this year’s event, which encourages runners and walkers to not only unite for fitness, but also to unite with friends by forming teams, and to unite for a cause by supporting various local charities.
